The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has officially awarded its 18th expansion franchise to Columbus, Ohio, a significant development for the city's vibrant soccer landscape, deeply rooted in the legacy of Columbuscrew. This new club, slated to commence play in 2028, will be jointly owned by Haslam Sports Group (HSG), Nationwide, and Drs. Christine and Pete Edwards, marking a major investment in women's professional sports in Central Ohio.

NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman highlighted Columbus's strong credentials for this expansion. "As the NWSL continues its rapid growth, expanding to Columbus is a natural next step," Berman stated. She emphasized the city's "rich soccer tradition, a proven track record of support at the highest level, and an ownership group making meaningful, long-term investments in women’s sports," expressing excitement for the community to embrace the league.

The ownership group, including Haslam Sports Group Managing Partner Whitney Haslam Johnson, expressed profound enthusiasm for the venture. Johnson affirmed, "Our family is thrilled to help bring an NWSL team to Columbus and further invest in Ohio, with the honor of bringing the 18th team into the league." She underscored their belief in the transformative power of women’s sports and its unifying impact on communities, envisioning a significant influence on Columbus for generations.

Nationwide Chief Executive Officer Kirt Walker echoed this sentiment, linking the announcement to Nationwide's centennial celebration. "Today’s announcement is about inspiring young athletes across Central Ohio, elevating women’s professional sports and reminding the world that Columbus is a first-class sports city," Walker said, emphasizing the company's commitment to its home community.

Dr. Christine Edwards, a long-time supporter of the Columbus Crew and MLS for over 30 years, shared her family's personal connection to soccer in the city. "It's truly special to now welcome an NWSL club and the incredible women athletes who will also uplift our city on and off the pitch," she remarked, looking forward to creating new memorable moments with fans alongside HSG and Nationwide for NWSL Columbus 2028.

This successful NWSL Columbus 2028 movement signifies the ownership group's dedication to elevating Central Ohio through sport. Their collective mission extends beyond competing for championships, aiming to deliver memorable fan experiences and advance the city, region, and state through sports, with a particular focus on promoting education and youth soccer.
